2 HuJI-B men held in Dhaka

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested two persons for alleged involvement with banned militant outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami Bangladesh (HuJI-B).

The arrestees are Abdul Quddus, 57, and Md Sirajul Islam alias Salauddin, 35. They were arrested from Dhaka’s Malibagh area on Sunday night, said RAB-3 Assistant Superintendent of Police Farjana Haque.

She said that the central organisation of HuJI-B was formed in 1984 during the Soviet-Afghan War. HuJI-B carried out several terrorist attacks from 1999 to 2006 including the attempt to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The group, blamed for over 100 deaths in various terrorist attacks after forming, is also known for supporting the Rohingya insurgency in Myanmar, she said.

Farjana said Abdul Quddus is a Huzi-B’s regional and central coordinator of Jashore. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in a militant case filed with Sadar Police Station in Jhenaidah. Later, he was freed and joined Huzi-B again.
