Militants have become cleverer: RAB DG

The escape of militants from the court premises a while back was not only the failure of the police but also the failure of all who are deputed to maintain law and order, says the director general (DG) of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

“But law enforcement agencies will never give up. As far as we know, they [militants] are still in the country. If they cannot flee the country, they will be caught today or tomorrow,” said M Khurshid Hossain on Monday.

RAB uses technology to catch criminals. But the militants have become cleverer. They do not use technological stuff always to avoid detection and stay underground, forcing the law enforcers to use traditional methods, he said.

The RAB DG made the remarks after inspecting the overall security system at and around the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka on Tuesday, February 21, when the nation will observe International Mother Language Day and “Shaheed Dibash” (Martyrs Day) paying tributes to the 1952 Language Movement martyrs.

“There is no fear of any militant attack on the day,” he said. “The law enforcement and intelligence agencies have found no such threats. However, we’ll remain vigilant.”

Referring to the security measures at the Shaheed Minar, the RAB DG said the elite force’s plainclothesmen will conduct round-the-clock surveillance alongside CCTV cameras and check-posts in the area to ensure the safety of the people.

RAB-3 is coordinating with other law enforcement agencies. RAB’s bomb disposal unit and the dog squad will complete the sweeping before the events begin, he said.

Apart from this, RAB’s Special Forces and helicopters will be standing by to deal with any untoward situation, Khurshid added.
