Chief of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit Md Asaduzzaman on Wednesday ruled out any possibilities of increased activities of militant groups during the next general election.
He said that during elections, the law enforcement forces remain extremely busy to ensure security for electioneering activities, rallies and others gatherings.
“Militants think law enforcers would pay less attention to them during polls and it happened before. Now, there is no opportunity for militants to increase their activities during the elections,” he said.
Asaduzzman said earlier there was no special unit to deal with militancy. “Now, the CTTC unit is working to control militants’ activities and we don’t think that militants will get their previous space in the upcoming national elections,” he said, responding to a question from journalists at a press conference in DMP Media Center on Wednesday.
The press conference war arranged after arrest off militant group ‘Jamatul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya’ nayeb-e-amir Mohibullah alias “Bholar Shayekh”, 48. He was arrested with two mobile phone sets and a laptop at Dhaka’s Sayedabad bus terminal area on Tuesday night, he said.
The CTTC chief said that Mohibullah was also an active member of the banned extremist outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad Bangladesh (HuJI-B) when he was a student of a madrassah in Hathazari and gto “jihadi training” with other members of HuJI-B.
