A Dhaka court on Tuesday accepted a case filed by the sister of Gulf Air pilot Mohannad Yousef Hassan Al Hindi accusing a doctor of United Hospital in Dhaka of providing the pilot with wrong treatment that led to his death.
Victim’s sister Tala Elhendy Josephano, also a US citizen, filed the case with Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court against Dr Omar Faruque, professor and chief consultant of the Department of Critical Care Medicine and Emergency Medicine at the United Hospital, and 10 to 12 other people on charges of providing her brother with wrong treatment.
Metropolitan Magistrate Arafatul Rakib accepted the case and directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the allegation and submit a report.
According to the case, Gulf Air pilot Mohannad Yousef Hassan Al Hindi collapsed at Dhaka airport sometimes before his flight and was admitted to the United Hospital on December 14, 2022, where he died on the next day.
Elhendy said the hospital was on risk of losing its license when five patients died in the fire incident on May 27, 2020 due to negligence of the hospital authorities.
The plaintiff said, “There are many examples of their negligence. The last victim was my brother. I demand justice with exemplary punishment in the legal process, including cancellation of license of the hospital.”
Elhendy also said, “The hospital authorities tried to delay in providing footage of the closed-circuit camera on January 22 when I arrived in Dhaka. United Hospital denied providing any information. I unearthed the information with self-effort.”
She said her brother was not given timely and proper treatment at the hospital after he had a heart attack.
Earlier, Elhendy held a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the capital on January 30 in this regard.
Later she went to the Gulshan police station to file a case against the hospital authorities. However, police officials advised Elhendy to file a case with a court assuring her that the police would help if the court gave directives in this regard.
