Govt mulls founding separate maternity hospital in every district

The government is planning to establish separate hospitals for delivering healthcare services to the new mothers and their neonatal children in every district.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque disclosed the decision in a discussion in Dhaka on Sunday.

He said that the government is working in full-swing to ensure that local patients of cancer, kidney and liver diseases should not be needed to travel to Dhaka and can avail the treatment at their own divisions. So, hospitals are being constructed at the division level, he added.

At the same time, the government has decided to deliver separate healthcare services to the mothers and children at the grassroots level hospitals, he said adding that they have already ensured round-the -clock healthcare services for mothers and children in hundreds of local hospitals.

“We, very soon, are going to install 30 to 50 bed separate hospitals in every district. If possible, the initiative will help reduce difficulties of would-be mothers during their journey to childbirth and will also reduce the expenses in the process significantly,” he added.

The discussion was arranged at the National Institute of Preventive and Social Medicine (NIPSOM) celebrating the 103rd birthday of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Children's Day 2023.

The minister criticised deploying children as labourer depriving them from education and enjoying their childhood. He also urged not to get the girl children married off to ensure good health for the going to be mother and upcoming children.

Director General of Health Services Prof Dr ABM Khurshid Alam presided over the programme. Nasir Uddin, director of Institute of Public Health, NIPSOM Line Director Abdul Mannan and officials from the directorate, NIPSOM and IPH were, among others, also present.
