Single-use plastic won’t be allowed in Sundarbans

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin on Monday said tourists will not be allowed to take single-use plastic items in the Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest.

“Due to the use of plastic, the environment and biodiversity are being severely affected in the Sundarbans,” he told a discussion in Dhaka.

The meeting titled ‘The Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's historical leadership and development of the country’ was organised at the Department of Environment (DoE), marking the Independence and National Day.

Speaking as the chief guest, Shahab Uddin instructed the secretary of the ministry to take necessary steps to stop the use of single-use plastic in the Sundarbans.

He said a special initiative has been taken to check single-use plastic in 40 upazilas of 12 coastal districts of the country.

Terming Bangabandhu a rare leader in the world, the environment minister said the Father of the Nation dedicated his whole life for freedom and took the war-torn country to a stage of development.

He said the dream of Bangabandhu is being fulfilled by his efficient daughter, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, by bringing smiles on the faces of helpless people.
