Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq on Sunday said the government is discussing about the Digital Security Act (DSA) issue with the Office of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights for making some changes in the act as it was misused in some cases.

The minister told these to newsmen while replying question on recent uproar over the arrest of daily Prothom Alo reporter Shamsuzzaman Shams in a case filed under the DSA.

“The cases were filed against wrongdoings, not against any media or journalists. However, we are discussing the matter with the Office of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights for making some changes in it,” Anisul also said.

He added that they wanted that journalists are not harassed unnecessarily. “We have adopted one such process. Besides, we have to take action against the incident of giving Tk 10 to a child and fabricating his quote to tarnish the image of the government,” he added.

Anisul also said, “A technical note was sent from the UN office, and we are examining that. If necessary, changes will be made, but it is clear that Digital Security Act is important.”

Earlier, the minister spoke at a seminar titled, “Revisiting Arbitration Act for Promoting FDI in Bangladesh” organised by the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) in the capital where British High Commissioner in Dhaka Robert Chatterton Dickson was present.

However, Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman, correspondent Samsuzzaman Shams, an unnamed assistant cameraman and a few others, unnamed, were sued in the case lodged by Supreme Court Lawyer Abdul Malek alias Mashiur Malek at the Ramna Police Station on 29 March.

Shams was transferred to Kashimpur Central Jail from the Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj on 31 March.
