The mortal remains of veteran politician Pankaj Bhattacharya will be taken to Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka today for the public to pay last tributes, his family sources said.
The veteran politician died midnight past Sunday at the age of 83.
The public homage to one of the organisers of 1971 War of Liberation will be paid from 10:00am to noon before he is cre-mated at Postogola Crematorium in Dhaka, said a family member.
Pankaj breathed his last at Health and Hope hospital in Dhaka. He has been suffering from old age ailments, including breathing complications. He was put on life support on Saturday after his condition deteriorated.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday expressed condolence at the death of Pankaj, who was the president of Oikya NAP until the last day.
Pankaj was born at Noapara of Raozan in Chottogram district in 1939. He had been active in democratic political move-ment since his school days. He had been an active participant in all democratic movements of the country during the 1960s leading to the Liberation War in 1971.
His wife prominent women leader Rakhi Das Puraykayastha died in April, 2022 while the couple had no surviving siblings.
Pankaj was respected by fellow politicians across the political lines alongside a large number of people because of his in-tegrity while he was a key witness and organizer of the pre-and post-independence pro-democracy movements and events since 1960s.
