Teachers of the government polytechnic institutions on Sunday started a nonstop sit-in protesting against being deprived of salaries for the past 34 consecutive months.
They started the sit-in in front of the Directorate of Technical Education in the capital’s Agargaon at 10:00am on Sunday.
They demanded payment of arrears and quick assimilation of their jobs into the revenue sector of the government without further delay.
They also declared that they will continue the sit-in until the demands are met.
They said a total of 777 teachers were appointed under the Skills Training and Enhancement Project (STEP) in 2012 to solve the shortage of teachers in 49 government polytechnic institutes.
There are 777 teachers, including the children of freedom fighters, who have completed all the steps of the recruitment process and received their appointment letters on December 23, 2012.
The project was ongoing till June 30, 2019 in two phases. Then, through the letter on June 30, 2019, the Technical and Madrasah Education Division of the Ministry of Education issued a circular to start the education programme with the project’s manpower.
Later, the prime minister on May 22, 2019 gave permission to transfer their jobs to the revenue sector after the completion of the project.
The teachers also got salary and allowances for the financial year 2019-2020 from the government allocation but it was continued till June 2020.
However, since then, they are not getting salaries due to delays in the process of transferring their job to the revenue sector.
They said now they have crossed the age limit to apply for any government jobs.
Most of the teachers are the only earner in their family. Due to a lack of salary, they are living an inhumane life with their families. Even many of them, cannot provide treatment to their parents and send their children to schools, they said.
