4 held with 24kg crystal meth worth Tk 120cr

Members of the Rapid Action Battalion have arrested four people allegedly with a consignment of 24 kilogram of crystal meth worth about Tk 120 crore in Ukhiya of Cox’s Bazar.

The consignment of crystal meth, commonly known as ice, was seized during a raid around 9pm on Saturday, claimed RAB’s Legal and Media Wing Director Khandaker Al Moin at a press briefing at the RAB office at Cox’s Bazar on Sunday.

The detainees are Imran Prakash Iran Majhi, 33, his brother Md Rubel Prakash Rubel of Palangkhali, Md Alauddin, 35, of Rajapalang, Joynal Abedin Prakash Kala, 37, of Teknaf.

Moin said acting on a tip-off, a team of RAB conducted a raid at Ukhiya-Palangkhali. The four were detained during the raid and 24 kg of crystal meth was seized from their possession.

This is the highest shipment of this drug seized in the country, he said.

According to the official, more than seven cases over drugs smuggling, weapons, kidnapping and attempted murder had been filed at different times against the detainees with various police stations including Ukhiya. Imran Prakash and his brother Rubel were previously arrested four times in different cases and served different terms of imprisonment.

Besides, Alauddin is an ex-member of the Bangladesh Police. He was arrested in 2017 for carrying drugs. He is accused in more than four cases related to drugs, banditry and fighting filed with various police stations including Ukhiya.

Moreover, detainee Joynal Abedin is accused in more than six cases filed with various police stations for drug smuggling, weapons, attempted murder, fighting and obstructing government work.

Legal action against the detainees is under process, added the RAB official.
