98 sued in 3 cases over BNP-police clash

Following a clash between Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leaders and activists with the police in Dhaka’s Science Laboratory area, the police have filed three separate cases.

Two cases were filed under the Explosives Act and the Special Powers Act with dhanmondi Police Station, while another case was filed with New Market Police Station.

Among the accused in the cases, BNP Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, BNP’s Publicity Affairs Secretary Shahiduiddin Chowdhury Annie, BNP Chairperson’s Advisor Abul Khair Bhuiyan, and Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal President Sultan Salahuddin Tuku are prominent.

Inspector Saiful Islam, officer in-charge (investigation) at Dhanmondi Police Station, said that each case named 52 BNP activists, along with many unnamed individuals as accused. The cases were filed by Sub-inspector Muyid Khan and Moazzem Hossain of Dhanmondi Police Station, with 27 people who were arrested during the clash being made accused in the cases.

Shafiqul Gani Sabu, the officer-in-charge of New Market Police Station, mentioned that their personnel filed a case accusing 46 named individuals and around 500 unnamed BNP supporters. Among the named accused were ten activists of the BNP who were arrested during the incident.

Both officials stated that the charges against the accused include attempted murder of police personnel, arson attacks, vandalism of vehicles, unlawful gathering, obstruction of law enforcers from performing their duties, and possession and detonation of crude bombs.

Earlier, BNP activists clashed with the police and attempted to set a double-decker bus on fire at the Science Laboratory crossing in Dhaka on Tuesday. Police reported that BNP activists attacked the police during their march to press for a 10-point demand, including holding the next general election under a non-party caretaker government. The BNP activists were also accused of vandalizing cars and attempting to set a BRTC bus on fire.
