Heat wave prompts govt to close pry schools on June 5-8

In light of the ongoing severe heat wave across the country, the government has decided to temporarily close all government primary schools from June 5 to 8 to ensure the health and safety of students.

A press release signed by Mahbubur Rahman, Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, stated that the decision was made with the well-being of the children in mind. Other primary schools, including kindergartens, have the option to follow the order at the discretion of their respective authorities.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, a severe heat wave is currently affecting the districts of Rajshahi, Naogaon, Nilphamari, and Dinajpur, and this condition is expected to persist. Additionally, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, and Barishal divisions, as well as the remaining parts of Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions, and the districts of Moulvibazar, Chandpur, and Noakhali, are experiencing a mild to moderate heat wave which is also likely to continue.

The heat wave is expected to last for the next five to six days in the country.

A heat wave is classified into three categories based on temperature: mild (36° to 37.9° C), moderate (38° C to 39.9° C), and severe (40° C and above). It occurs when the daily maximum temperature exceeds 36° C over a large area.
