Chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Law and Order and Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque on Tuesday said that the committee has recommended to the cabinet for extending the Eid-ul-Azha holiday by one day and begin the vacation on June 27 instead of June 28.
Eid-ul-Azha or the Feast of Sacrifice is the second of the two main holidays celebrated in Islam. Part of their meat is consumed by the family which offers the animal, while the rest of the meat is distributed to the poor and the needy. The goal is to make sure every Muslim gets to eat meat.
Previously, during Eid-ul-Fitr this year, the government decided to extend the holidays by a day through an executive order. To extend the holiday, the government declared April 20 a holiday too and so the five-day Eid holiday begun from April 19.
At that time, Cabinet Secretary Md Mahbub Hossain had said that since April 19 was a public holiday on the occasion of Shab-e-Qadr, office remained open for a day on April 20 before Eid. So, the government had decided to declare April 20 as holiday by an executive order to ease the travel of holidaymakers.
