Like other parts of the world, World Blood Donors Day will be observed in the country on Wednesday inspiring people to donate blood for saving lives.
The theme of this year’s World Blood Donors Day is “Give Blood, Give Plasma, Share Life, Share Often.’
This year as the host country, Algeria will organise the global event of World Blood Donor Day-2023. The day has been observed globally since 2004.
Marking the day, Quantum Foundation which has a donors’ pool of over 474,000 people, will hold an event for blood donors and recipients for the first time creating a scope for them to meet, share feelings and show gratitude.
The majority of donors do not know to whom they donate blood as well as recipients are not aware of whose blood they have received.
Around 200 thalassemia patients and 200 donors are expected to join the gathering at the IDEB Bhaban at 5:15 pm which may encourage new donors to contribute to the noble cause.
According to the Haematology Society of Bangladesh, there are more than 80,000 thalassemia patients in the country and more than 1.7 million population are thalassemia carriers.
Later, a seminar on Thalassemia will be held as thalassemia patients need blood one to three times a month. Blood tests before marriage can help eliminate thalassemia patients from the country.
Since its beginning in 2000, the Foundation has so far saved lives by providing 1.5 million units of blood and blood cells.
