Graft convict Haji Selim gets HC bail

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has granted bail to Haji Mohammad Salim, MP, in a corruption case.

The court also gave him permission to appeal against the 10-year sentence given to him by the High Court in a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.

An appellate division bench led by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order this morning.

On October 24, 2007, ACC filed a case against Haji Selim with Lalbagh Police Station alleging illegal acquisition of assets. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison on April 27, 2008.

On October 25, 2009, Selim appealed to the High Court against the verdict. The High Court quashed his sentence accepting his appeal on January 2, 2011,

ACC later appealed against the High Court verdict.

The judgment of the High Court was quashed on January 12, 2015, and the Appellate Division directed a re-hearing in the High Court again. In re- hearing, Selim was acquitted of the three-year sentence, although the 10-year sentence was upheld.

The full copy of the judgment was published on February 10 this year. The verdict asked Selim to surrender before the trial court within 30 days, and the High Court ordered cancelling his bail and issuing an arrest warrant if he did not show up.

Dhaka's Special Judge Court-7 denied him bail on May 22, after he surrendered before the court.

On May 24, Selim made a leave to appeal and pleaded for bail.

However, the ACC has made an appeal against the verdict that exempted him from the liabilities for concealing information in his wealth statement submitted to the ACC.
