The Rapid Action Battalion has said they arrested Sultana Jesmin, who died in RAB custody in Naogaon, on a verbal complaint of Joint Secretary Enamul Haque in his presence and they also interrogated her in the presence of the complainant.
RAB’s Legal and Media Wing Director Commander Khandaker Al Moin said a patrol team of RAB arrested Jesmin on her way to the office.
He said they have no information on whether the body of Sultana Jesmin bore any mark injuries in the head as nothing such is mentioned on the death certificate.
Moin, however, said action will be taken if any RAB member was found responsible for Jesmin’s death.
The RAB spokesperson said Joint Secretary Enamul Haque had filed a general diary in March 2022 with the local police station reporting that a group was cheating people and collecting money luring them to provide them with jobs and other works using his name and a fake Facebook account in his name.
He also could trace the names of two people – Al-Amin and Jasmin – who are involved in the fraud, said Moin.
Moin said that Enamul complained about the matter to a RAB patrol team on his way to the office. And the RAB team detained Jesmin in his presence for questioning.
RAB’s female members, witness and complainant Enamul were also present during the interrogation, he added.
Moin said during interrogation in the presence of witnesses Jasmin, an employee of the land office of Naogaon Sadar Upazila, confessed to all the allegations. A fake Facebook ID in the name of Enamul Haque was seen running on her mobile phone. Sonali Bank account information is available on her mobile where deposit receipts of several lakh takas were also found, he said.
Later, the RAB members printed seizure evidence in a computer shop for filing a case against her. On the way to the police station, Jesmin felt sick and RAB rushed her to the hospital, added Moin.
“Jasmin got off the car and entered the hospital on foot. The doctors talked to her at that time. Her sister, brother-in-law and uncle were also called in. Even his colleague and assistant commissioner (land) was also called in. Her treatment was going on in their presence,” said Moin.
“She was later referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in the evening. A CT scan showed signs of stroke. A day later she died. The doctors mentioned it as the cause of her death. It can also be found in the post-mortem report,” he added.
Moin said that since the allegation of death in RAB custody came, the RAB headquarters’ inquiry cell is working on this. An inquiry committee has already been formed and started working. The investigation is looking at whether there was any kind of negligence. If anyone is found guilty in the investigation then strict departmental action including dismissal will be taken against them as before, he added.
