A consignment of 15,02,400 doses of Pfizer Covid vaccine for children aged five to 11 arrived in Dhaka on Saturday morning.

This is the first consignment of vaccines for the children delivered through the COVAX programme.

Dr Md Shamsul Haque, the director of the vaccination programme at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), said the vaccine doses have been made especially for the children and will be inoculated among schoolchildren very soon following a proper plan.

“Later on, other children, who do not come to school, in the community will be brought under the vaccination campaign,” he said.

Last year, the government brought students aged between 12 and 17 under Covid vaccination programme.

Although Western and developed countries started inoculating children aged six to 11 from late last year, Bangladesh approved it only after the World Health Organization advised it recently.

Meanwhile, the health authorities said that to get vaccines the children need to be registered through the Surokkha App using birth certificates.
