The dengue death toll on Tuesday reached 182 – a grim tally exceeding all previous annual records in Bangladesh since 2000, show the daily update from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Bangladesh posted the previous highest toll – 179 deaths from dengue with 101,354 cases – in 2019.

The DGHS reported five more deaths in the 24-hour period till 8am Tuesday. Besides, 820 patients were hospitalised with the viral fever over the 24 hours, according to the DGHS.

Of the new patients, 450 were admitted to different hospitals in Dhaka and 370 outside it, the DGHS said. As many as 3,223 dengue patients, including 1,947 in the capital, are now receiving treatment at public and private hospitals across the country.

This gradual increase in dengue infections has created widespread concerns among the residents of Dhaka city and elsewhere while hospitals are struggling to cope with the pressure of dengue patients despite setting up new wards.

The health authorities have recorded 44,802 dengue cases and 41,397 recoveries so far this year.
