Bangladesh has recorded 283 deaths from the mosquito-borne dengue disease, which is the highest in 23 years. In comparison, the country had logged 281 dengue-related deaths in 2022, followed by 179 fatalities registered in 2019.

The first case of dengue in Bangladesh was recorded in 2000. That year, 93 people died of dengue and 5,551 people were admitted to the hospitals.

This year, the outbreak of dengue is proving to be the most severe in the recorded history of Bangladesh.

In the last 24 hours till Thursday morning, 10 more deaths were reported from dengue, raising the fatalities to 283 this year. During the same period, 2,589 more patients were hospitalised with the viral fever, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Of the new patients, 1,101 were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka and the rest outside it, the health authorities said. A total of 9,210 dengue patients, including 4,650 in the capital, are now receiving treatment at hospitals across the country.

So far, the DGHS has recorded 59,716 dengue cases and 50,223 recoveries this year. In 2022, it recorded 62,423 dengue cases and 61,971 recoveries last year.
