Health Minister Zahid Maleque on Thursday said that pharmacies will remain open around the clock.

“If the city corporation has anything to say about it, the issue will be addressed through a discussion with them,” he told reporters after a meeting at the secretariat in the capital.

The minister made the remarks following a public notification issued by the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) over setting fixed time for running medicine shops.

When asked, Zahid Maleque said that they did not give any instructions regarding the closure of pharmacies. “I think it should be open for 24 hours.”

He said that the city corporation took the decision without consulting them. Therefore, necessary measures will be taken after discussion.

Earlier on August 22, the DSCC issued a notice allowing standalone pharmacies to remain open till midnight and those at hospitals till 2:00am with a view to saving power.

Besides, the corporation asked malls, shops, kitchen markets and other business outlets in its areas to remain open till 8:00pm and restaurants and hotels till 10:00pm.

The fresh order will be enforced from September 1 and it will remain in force until further notice, the notice said.
