The government has reappointed Prof Abul Bashar Mohammad Khurshid Alam as the Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) for two more years on contractual basis.

A gazette notification by the Ministry of Public Administration in this regard was issued on Tuesday.

The decision came a day after the Additional Director General (ADG) of the DGHS Professor Ahmedul Kabir was designated to perform routine duties (administrative and financial expenditure) of the directorate till a DG is appointed.

Since January 1 this year, the DG position of the directorate has remained vacant as the tenure of former DG Professor Dr ABM Khurshid Alam ended on the last day of 2022, read a Ministry of Health and Family Affair gazette notification issued Monday.

The ADG was also given the responsibilities of the Drawing and Disbursing Officer to manage important financial activities, with the permission to perform the DG’s routine duties, as per the notification.

On July 23 2020, Dr Khurshid Alam was first appointed as the DG of the DGHS, two days after Prof Dr Abul Kalam Azad stepped down from the post amid criticism over mismanagement and corruption in the health sector.

He was reappointed as the DG for two more years on December 24, 2020.
