Microsoft, the biggest software company in the world, is doing away with its four-week vacation policy and allowing US workers unlimited paid time off.

The Verge reports that the announcement was made in an email to employees from Kathleen Hogan, Microsoft’s chief people officer, on Thursday.

Microsoft is calling this “Discretionary Time Off,” and it will apply to all salaried US employees.

“How, when, and where we do our jobs has dramatically changed,” explains Hogan in an internal memo. “And as we’ve transformed, modernizing our vacation policy to a more flexible model was a natural next step.”

The changes will come into effect on January 16. Even new Microsoft can accrue vacation time, The Verge adds. However, hourly workers at Microsoft won’t be offered unlimited time off, nor will employees outside the US.
