CHT accounts for 91pc of malaria cases

Despite there being a prevalence of malaria in 13 districts across the country, 91 percent of malaria cases are reported from Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT).

The CHT districts -- Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban -- are considered to be most malaria-vulnerable districts, according to the Directorate General of Health Service (DGHS).

Dr Afsana Alamgir Khan, deputy programme manager of DGHS, said in the last 10 years, Bangladesh has fared better in terms of reducing the number of malaria patients and deaths.

From 2010 to 2019, the number of malaria infections and deaths from the mosquito-borne disease has dropped by 69 percent and 76 percent respectively, she said.

In 2019, 17,225 malaria patients were identified; of them, nine died, she added.

Bangladesh observed the World Malaria Day on Saturday.
