In spite of having modern equipment, three community hospitals in Bogura have been lying idle for 15 years, depriving locals from healthcare services even amid the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.

Local sources said Santahar Rathbari Hospital in Adamdighi, Nandigram Hospital in Nandigram and Aliar Hat hospital in Shibganj were built 15 years ago spending Tk 15 crore.

Civil surgeon office sources said the hospitals could not be operated due to shortage of doctors.

Bogura Civil Surgeon Gousul Azim Chowdhury said construction of the three hospitals was completed in 2005.

Every hospital needs at least six physicians and 18 nurses. But, no medical person has been appointed there till now, he added.

KGM Faruq, general secretary of Sushasoner Jonno Procharavizan (Campaign for Good Governance) of the district, said the hospitals have been lying idle for years as authorities are yet to approve the necessary workforce to get the facility running.

He also urged the government to open the hospitals for commoners as the health care situation of the country is in a crisis due to the Covid-19 situation.

Namdigram Upazila Health Complex officer Tofazzal Mondal said air-condition, x-ray machine and valuable equipment of Operation Theater remain unused as the hospital is yet to start its activities.

Former mayor of Nandigram municipality Kamal Hasan Siddiqi said the hospital should be activated immediately for greater interest of the people.

Shibganj Upazila Parishad Chairman Firoz Ahmed Rizu said Aliar Hat hospital should be declared Covid-19 special hospital as the pandemic situation is getting worse day by day.

“If the authorities decide to run the hospital for Covid-19 affected people, we can support then with the existing equipment,’’ he also said.

Adamdighi Upazila Chairman Sirajul Islam Razu said higher authorities have been urged several times to declare Santahar Rathbari Hospital as Covid-19 hospital.

Mostafizur Rahman Tuhin, deputy civil surgeon of Bogura district, said : “The government has only given us only the buildings and some equipment. But, we are yet to get physician or healthcare staff for the hospitals.”

“The equipment of the three hospitals will go out of order if they are not used, “ he added.

“The ongoing Covid-19 situation has brought untold sufferings to all. The people should be provided standard healthcare service. The hospitals should be opened now,” he also said.
