National Mourning Day observed across the country

The nation is observing the National Mourning Day and 46th martyrdom anniversary of Bangladesh’s founding father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, on Sunday in a befitting manner with due respect, reports BSS.

Some disgruntled army men brutally killed Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members on the fateful night of 15 August 1975, and this carnage is touted as the ugliest chapter of the nation’s history.

The government took elaborate programmes to observe the day with due respect and solemnity all around the country.

In Chattogram, black flags dominated the skyline of the port city, and the national flag was hoisted at half-mast at the government and private buildings while wreaths were placed on the portrait of Bangabandhu.

Hundreds of Awami League (AL) leaders, workers, gathered at the party office in the morning to place wreaths on the portrait of Bangabandhu maintaining social distance.

Also, Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) observed the day through various programmes including doa and Milad mahfil, discussions at 41 wards, hoisting the national flag at half-mast at its all ward offices, poetry recitations and essay competitions at all schools and colleges.

In Rangpur, an elite contingent of Rangpur Metropolitan Police gave a guard of honour in front of the Mural of Bangabandhu in the presence of high officials, followed by observance of a one-minute silence paying due respect to Bangabandhu and

offering special munajats there in the morning.

Milad mehfils were organized and special munajats offered at mosques after the Johr prayers and at mandirs, churches, pagodas and educational institutions at convenient times seeking divine blessings for the departed soul of Bangabandhu.

In Rajshahi, the Rajshahi City Corporation paid rich tribute to Bangabandhu by placing floral wreaths on his portrait at the City Bhaban premises, while the district administration on Shilpakala Academy premises in the morning and various other daylong programmes.

The district administration held a discussion meeting on ‘Bangabandhu and Bangladesh’ at Shilpakala Academy Auditorium.

In Narail, various government and non-government organizations, district administration, political parties, socio-cultural organizations and educational institutions observed the day befittingly.

The day’s programmes began with hoisting the national flag and black flag at half-mast, placing wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu at Old Bus terminal area at 9:00 am,

mourning processions, and offering special prayers holding discussion meetings.

In Netrakona, State Minister for Social Welfare Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru first placed a floral wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu in the morning.

Later, deputy commissioner Kazi Abdur Rahman, police super Akber Ali Munshi, chairman of Netrakona Zila Parishad Prasanta Kumar Ray, Mayor of Netrakona pourashava Nazrul Islam Khan and other public representatives, officers and Awami League leaders placed wreaths there.

In Jamalpur, the district administration, different socio-cultural organizations, political parties, including Awami League, professional groups, educational institutions observed the day by placing floral wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu, virtual discussion meeting, food distribution, documentary screening and holding special prayers in mosques and others religious institutions.

A discussion meeting was also held at the district AL office with Ashraf Hossain Tarafdar, vice-president of the district AL, in the district’s chair.
