Over 5,000 families of the flood-affected areas in Rangpur remain waterlogged as Teesta River is flowing above danger level– Zakir Hossain

The flood situation aggravated in Rangpur, as river Tessta was flowing above danger level Saturday morning, leaving thousands of families in Gangachara upazila of the district marooned.

According to Rangpur Water Development Board executive engineer Ahsan Habib, the upstream water of Teesta caused the flash flood in the upazila.

The water in the Teesta was flowing above the danger level at Dalia barrage point for the last two days.

Incessant rain and flow of upstream water in Teesta flooded about 5,000 families in 50 villages of six unions-Nohali, Kolkond, Alambiditor, Laxitari, Gojoghanta and Mornea of the upazila. Houses, roads and croplands have been marooned, reports our Rangpur correspondent Zakir Hossain.

Many of the flood victims have also taken shelter in makeshift houses on river embankments, higher lands and relatives’ houses along with domestic cattle.

Nohali UP chairman of the upazila, Abul Kalam Azad said, about 300 families in his union were marooned. Roads, houses, and croplands went underwater.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Taslima Begum said they have distributed 27 metric tonnes of rice among the flood-hit people during the last two days. “We also sought more relief materials from the ministry concerned for the flood victims,” she added.

Deputy Commissioner Asib Ahsan visited the worst affected unions Laxitari and Kolkond on Saturday morning.

When asked, he said, relief materials and cash money were distributed among the flood-hit people.

The Padma at Pakshi Hardinge Bridge Point in Ishwardi upazila is flowing just 14.20 cm below the danger level.
