Farmers in Kushtia are happy as they are getting excellent yield and fair price of jute due to availability of agri-inputs.

Price of the newly harvested jute in the village-markets and other centres is now on the increase making the farmers happy in the district.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension of the district, jute has been cultivated on 40,996 hectares of land in six upazilas of the district this year. Last year, jute was cultivated on 39,517 hectares of land. The farmers have cultivated varieties of jute including Desi, Robi-1, Mesta, JRO and Tossa in their land.

Due to favorable weather conditions and sowing of a high yielding variety of jute seed, farmers harvested the crops without any problem.

According to the farmers, last year the price of jute was Tk 1700 to Tk 2200 per mound, but this year jute is being sold at Taka 2,500 to 2,700 per mound on the basis of quality.

Farmers are getting Tk 10,000 to Tk 15,000 by selling jute from per bigha of land.

Farmers are making good profit by selling jute at a higher price than last year during the corona situation. Everyone has a golden smile on their face. Farmers said that jute cultivation will increase in the future if they get overall facilities and good prices from the agriculture department.

Many other farmers are passing their busiest days with various field level activities like harvesting, decomposing, fibre segregating, drying and selling.

Khademul Islam, a farmer of Mirpur upazila, said, last year I cultivated jute on two bighas of land and got 12 mounds of jute.
