Delay in power supply halts Bogura industrial units

Over 200 industrial units in Dhunat upazila, Bogura are struggling to operate properly due to a delay in power supply.

A number of factories have finished their setup and are ready to go for production they are unable to commence production due to the lack of power supply. A few other factories are operating through residential power connections.

Dhunat Zonal Office, Bogura under the Palli Bidyut Samity-02 has not provided new electric connections for the last one year due to supply shortage of equipment amid Covid-19 fallout, said an official.

More and more entrepreneurs in the upazila are opting for establishing their factories such as rice mill, sawmill, shoe factory, making it an emerging industrial zone with rapid expansion.

The entrepreneurs said they remained stuck with their investments in the absence of electric connections.

“Many entrepreneurs like me are contacting with Dhunat Zonal Office regularly about the electric lines. They know about our situation very well, yet there is this long delay,” entrepreneur Aminul Islam said.

“If we do not get the electric connection soon, we will have to shut down our businesses for good,” said Abu Taher, another entrepreneur of the area.

“I, along with some other entrepreneurs, have installed electric transmission lines allotted for residential houses. We know it is not legal, but how else would we run our factories if we do not get the power supply at all?” questioned Hazrat Ali, who has been waiting for a legal electric connection for the last six months.

Aminul, Hazrat, and other businessmen, who had been waiting for the power supply connection for long, told The Business Post that they

followed every instruction provided by the Palli Bidyut Samity yet did not get the lines.

The Deputy General Manager of Dhunat Zonal Office of Bogura Palli Bidyut Samiti, Mahbub Zia, told The Business Post that they could not collect the necessary equipment needed for the installation of the electric connections from abroad amid the pandemic.

“Because of the pandemic, many countries in the world were under strict lockdown, and we could not get the supplies.

“Now, as the lockdown, shutdown protocols are easing all over the world, we are hopeful that we will get the equipment soon,” said Mahbub.
