Navy seizes huge Current Jal in coastal area

Bangladesh Navy in separate drives seized huge illegal current nets worth about Tk 8.11 crore along with 300 kilogram of hilsa fish from sea and coastal areas. The government has imposed a 22-day ban starting from October 4 on catching, selling, storing and transporting hilsa, to ensure safe spawning of the Mother hilsa, during its peak breeding period.

Following the government’s directives against catching of mother hilsha, Bangladesh Navy has been conducting special drives against catching of mother hilsa under “In Aid to Civil Power” through seven ships, according to an ISPR release issued on Monday.

It said soon after seizing illegal nets and hilsha fish, the Navy destroyed nets and distributed hilsha fish among local orphanages in presence of law enforcement agencies and fisheries officials.

The release said that the drive will continue till October 25.

In Manikganj, around 73,600 metre nets and 646 kgs of hilsha were seized during seperate drives conducted by the Department of Fisheries on different points of the Padma and Jamuna River to protect the mother hilsa.

District Fisheries Officer Sayfur Rahman said a total of 97 special drives and 22 mobile courts were conducted in different points of Harirampur, Shibalaya and Daulatpur areas in the district so far, from the beginning of the ban on catching hilsa fish.
