The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction was observed in Gaibandha district on Wednesday as elsewhere in the country and the globe with a call to remain always ready to tackle disasters.
Marking the day, district administration chalked out elaborate programmes in cooperation with Fire Service and Civil Defense, Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), district unit and non-government organisations including GUK and SKS Foundation.
In the morning, a discussion on the significance of the day was also held at the hall room of Gaibandha Govt Boys’ High School of the town with additional deputy commissioner general Md. Sadequr Rahnman in the chair.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abdul Matin addressed the meeting as the chief guest. The function was also addressed, among others, by general secretary of district Awami League Abu Bakar Siddique, secretary of BDRCS, district unit, Rezaul Karim Reza, Sadar UNO Rafiul Alam, head teacher Sahana Banu, Sadar upazila project implementation officer Anisur Rahman, inspector of police Jalal Uddin, deputy assistant director of Fire Service Md. Enamul Haque and representative of SKS Foundation Md. Ashraf Ali.
DC Abdul Matin emphasized on expediting disaster preparedness and creating awareness among the people of disaster prone areas and making them well equipped in handling disaster moments to reduce the loss of lives and properties.
The government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been implementing a number of effective measures to reduce risks of different natural calamities since 2009 and Bangladesh is now a role model in combating natural disasters, the DC also said.
