Shamsul Islam, an eminent educationist and former Professor of Rajshahi University, died at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital on Friday afternoon.
He was 71.
Islam left behind his wife, one son and a large number of students, academic colleagues, relatives and admirers to mourn his death, a RU release said this afternoon.
During his long academic career in the Department of Chemistry from 1973 to 2017, Prof Shamsul Islam supervised many PhD, M. Phil and post-graduation research papers.
Besides, he has a remarkable number of research papers and books at home and abroad to his credit. Born in Gomostapur in Chapainawabganj district in 1950, Prof Shamsul Islam obtained B. Sc and M. Sc degrees in Chemistry from Rajshahi University in 1970 and 1972 respectively. He got PhD degree from Rajshahi University in 1990.
Meanwhile, RU Vice-chancellor Prof Golam Sabbir Sattar and Pro-VCs Prof Chowdhury Jakaria and Prof Sultan-Ul-Islam expressed their deep shock and sorrow at the death of Prof Shamsul Islam.
