December 10 is a red-letter day for the people of Mymensingh as the district tasted freedom from the Pakistani occupation army on this day in 1971.

Marking the day, the district administration and Muktijoddha Sangsad’s Mymensingh unit have jointly taken a week-long programme at Chhoto Bazar ‘Mukta Mancha’ from today.

The programme includes Bijoy Rally, which will start from Chotto Bazar Mukto Moncha at 10 am on Friday. Also, a documentary film will be screened based on the Liberation War following a discussion and cultural programme. Besides, all the upazilas of the district will celebrate the day with different programmes.

In 1971 on this day, the freedom fighters led by Principal Motiur Rahman, ex religious affairs minister and ex-president of the district unit of Awami League, with Indian allied forces marched towards the Mymensingh town and reached the Circuit house ground. They valiantly fought with the Pakistani Army and freed Mymensingh. Following the win, Pak occupation forces fled to Dhaka through Tangail district around midnight on December 9 in 1971.

On April 17 in 1971, a fierce battle took place between the Pakistani Army and the freedom fighters at Kalihati in Tangail on April 17, and it had continued for five days. It was the first fierce battle in this region during the 1971 Liberation War.

The Pakistani troops managed to enter Mymensingh town on April 22. The freedom fighters built their stronghold in the Haluaghat upazila of the district. Several battles took place in the border area during the nine-month-long bloody war.

On December 7, the freedom fighters freed Haluaghat from the occupation forces; on December 8, Phulpur, Bhaluka, Phulbaria and Gouripur upazilas were freed. On December 10, freedom fighters freed Muktagachha upazila from the clutches of the occupation forces.

Netrakona liberation day observed

Netrakona liberation day was celebrated on Thursday, commemorating the front battle between Pakistani occupation forces and the freedom fighters, which ended with hoisting the national flag of newly independent Bangladesh by the freedom fighters atop all the public and private buildings in the town on December 9, 1971.

The people of Netrakona were liberated following the landslide victory of freedom fighters in the face-to-face war at the Muktarpara bridge area in the Netrakona town.

Netrakona district administration and different socio-cultural, political and professional organizations, including district Awami league and district Muktizoddha Sangsad, took various programs to mark the day.

The programmes include placing floral wreaths on the memorial monuments of martyred freedom fighters and independence memorial monument here, holding of discussion meeting and musical soiree based on patriotic songs.

The day’s programme formally started with the placing of floral wreaths at the freedom fighters memorial monument on the Netrakona district collectorate office premises by state minister for social welfare Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru, MP.
