On this day in 1971, freedom fighters took control of the Sirajganj district town after defeating the Pakistani occupation forces in a fierce battle that led to the district’s independence.
On the night of December 13, several groups of freedom fighters took position at strategic points around the town, including Rahamatganj, Mirpur, and the bank of Jamuna adjacent to Launch Ghat.
The Pakistani soldiers receiving information from their local collaborators also took position at several places, including Wapda, rest house, and police station areas.
A fierce battle ensued when the valiant freedom fighters launched attacks on the Pakistani soldiers, forcing them to retreat.
Later, the Pakistani soldiers gathered at Sirajganj Bazar Railway Station and left the town by train in the early morning.
To mark the day, Sirajganj District Muktijoddha Sangsad organised different programmes including discussion and rally.
