Girls’ school gets sanitation complex in Rajshahi

Shaheed Nazmul Haque Girls’ High School in the city is going to get a sanitation complex aimed at inspiring its students to lead a healthy life through using water, sanitation and menstrual hygiene management.

Under the school sanitation complex, twelve toilets will be set up, including two having menstrual hygiene management facilities like sanitary pad, sanitizer and tissue.

There will be sufficient lighting facilities for drying besides comfort fresh rooms for the girls in the complex.

Apart from this, a drinking water station will be installed for safe drinking water management in addition to establishing two hand washing stations.

Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) and Village Education Resource Centre (VERC) will implement the school sanitation complex project with an estimated cost of around Taka 8.75 lakh supported by Climate Bridge Fund and Wateraid Bangladesh.

School Managing Committee President Shaheen Akhter Rainy inaugurated the construction works of the complex yesterday as chief guest.

She said the adolescent girls will be sensitized about menstrual hygiene development mentioning that menstruation is still treated as a taboo in the present society, with discussions about menstrual health and menstrual hygiene management (MHM) only happening behind closed doors.

She, however, attributed that the School Sanitation Complex will lead the adolescent girls to a right direction.

RCC Chief Community Development Officer Azizur Rahman, Wateraid Zonal Coordinator Rezaul Huda and VERC Project Manager Kamruzzaman Sarker were present on the occasion.

Rezaul Huda told the meeting that WaterAid Bangladesh has been implementing a three-year project titled “Composite Actions for Climate Migrants in Urban Slums (CACMUS)” for the last couple of months in the city.

Around 10,000 climate migrants will get clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene support in ten slum areas with intervention of the project.

To this end, 51 resilient and context-specific facilities will be installed and renovated besides installation and renovation of 28 community toilets.

Apart from this, 104 community people will be imparted caretaker training for operation and maintenance of the hardware options.
