Two women were burnt in a fire caused by a gas explosion at an apartment of a building in Rahattarpul area under Bakalia thana of Chattogram district on Thursday.
The names of the two women were not ascertained immediately.
Md Shahidul Islam, senior station officer of Chandanpura Fire Service and Civil Defense, confirmed the news.
On information, a team of firefighting unit rushed to the spot. Locals had already taken the two burnt women to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) in a critical condition before the team reached the scene, said the station officer.
Police primarily suspected the fire to be originated from the gas stove at the apartment.
He added that various furniture of the house were gutted and the doors and windows of the flat were broken during the explosion.
According to one estimate burn injuries account for an estimated 265,000 deaths annually across the globe and 40 per cent of these burn injuries occur exclusively in South and Southeast Asia.
