The Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed is going to establish a full-fledged centre in the divisional city of Rajshahi for the welfare of patients with paralysis and various forms of disabilities.
Rajshahi Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton has donated 15 bighas of land for the establishment of the centre in the city.
A contract was signed at the Nagar Bhaban on Sunday evening to establish the centre.
CRP’s founder and coordinator Dr Valorie A Tailor and its executive director Dr Muhammad Sohrab were present on the occasion.
With this venture, the physically challenged people caused by spinal cord injuries will get necessary treatment and rehabilitation services at the centre, said the secretary of the city corporation, Moshiur Rahman.
Mayor Khairuzzaman said the time has come to empower persons with spinal cord injuries (SCI) for sustainable growth and development to ensure their rights and entitlement in society.
He also called for formulating policy and rules to exclusively protect the interests of persons with SCI in society.
“All of us should work together to create a favourable environment for the people with spinal cord injuries removing various social, economic and infrastructural barriers,” he said.
Valorie Tailor said the CRP was founded to establish the rights of people with spinal cord injuries. It is encouraging SCI people to continue their education higher education, and they have been providing financial assistance for many students.
She lauded the initiative and said there should be adequate measures and interventions for rehabilitation of the physically challenged people to free them from their plights.
Valorie mentioned that the people with disabilities caused by spinal cord injuries are subjected to repression and negligence from their families alongside society.
So, they need community support for their proper rehabilitation. She also said that community people should create an enabling environment for them in society to improve their participation and accessibility to services and resources.
