Collective efforts needed to protect wildlife

Collective efforts of all the government, non-government and volunteer organisations can be the best ways of protecting wildlife from further degradation.

Utmost emphasis should be given on creating awareness about wildlife and the importance of protecting the environment for the sake of survival of all the living beings. Existence of wildlife is very important for protecting biodiversity.

Experts and other stakeholders came up with the observation while addressing a discussion on the issue at the conference hall of Deputy Commissioner on Thursday.

The District administration and the Social Forestry Division jointly organised the discussion in observance of the World Wildlife Day (WWD)-2022.

The theme of the day this year is “Recovering key species for ecosystem restoration”. DC Abdul Jalil addressed the discussion as chief guest, while valiant freedom fighter Dr Abdul Mannan and Additional DC Kolyan Chowdhury spoke as special guests with Divisional Forest Officer Rafriquzzaman Shah in the chair.

Zillur Rahman, Director of Forestry Science and Technology Institute, gave an illustration on conservation of wildlife for ecological balance.

He opined that the wildlife population has been gradually declining due to various reasons including shrinking of their habitat. That is why time- fitting measures should be adopted.

Rahman said wildlife sanctuary is very important for protecting the natural world. So, ensuring security to the wildlife has become an urgent need.

All government, non-government and research organizations concerned should come forward and work together to protect the existing wildlife and nature from further degradation, he added.

The speakers discussed various issues related to the conservation of migratory birds and biodiversity.

In his remarks, Abdul Jalil said that people are destroying the environment for their own needs, and by doing that are also destroying their habitat. People need to raise awareness about this. In order to conserve biodiversity, human behaviour must be animal friendly.

He also called for proper conservation of wildlife for maintaining environmental balance stressing the need for more public awareness about the importance of wildlife.
