Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) is going to release a souvenir titled ‘Bangabandhu in Rangpur’ marking the ‘Cantonment Gherao Dibash (Cantonment Siege Day)’ on March 28 next.
Mayor of Rangpur Md. Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa disclosed the information while addressing the monthly meeting of Rangpur City Corporation held at the City Bhaban conference room here on Sunday afternoon.
“Preparations are underway for the release of the souvenir on March 28 next,” he said.
On March 28, 1971, thousands of Bangalees irrespective of caste, creed, ethnicity and religion attacked Rangpur Cantonment in a bid to capture it only three days after the March 25 crackdowns on innocent Bangalees in Dhaka by Pakistani occupation army.
Around 600 heroic sons of the soil laid down their lives in the attacks on March 28 as Rangpur people started preparing for the War of Liberation after getting concrete directions from the historic March 7 speech of Bangabandhu in 1971.
The meeting discussed progress of making the souvenir, ongoing development activities, sales of essentials by TCB, programs marking celebrations of March 17 and March 26 next.
Chief Executive Officer of RpCC Md. Ruhul Amin Miah, its Superintending Engineer Md. Amdad Hossain, City Councilors Md. Samsul Haque, Alhaj Md. Mahmudur Rahman Titu, Farida Begum, Md. Tauhidul Islam, Md. Sekandar Ali, Md. Mahbubur Rahman Manju among others, were present.
