Youth detained ‘for hurting religious sentiments’

Police have detained a youth from Amurbunia village of Bagerhat after his alleged abusive Facebook post against Islam triggered an attack in his house and a nearby temple.

The detainee has identified as Kowshik Bishwash, 23, a mason from Amurbunia village in Morrelganj upazila of the district. Around 8.30pm on Monday, some 250 to 300 agitated Muslims vandalised his house and a nearby temple, said KM Ariful Haque, superintendent of Bagerhat Police.

“The village is home to 56 Muslim and 54 Hindu families. Additional police force has been deployed in the area to prevent any untoward situation,” said SP Ariful.
