Farming of Honey Queen pineapple is gaining ground and makes many farmers of Palash upazila in Narsingdi district happy as it brings a substantial amount of money to them.
A number of farmers mainly in three villages - Raban, Borabo, and Jinardee of the upazila - are involved in farming the honey queen variety in high lands and homestead gardens considering its economic aspect.
Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) officials said huge quantities of pineapple are being produced in Palash Upazila with necessary assistance from the DAE.
The officials said that, despite its smaller size than other pineapple species, this variety is sweet and flavorful.
Some 500-600 saplings can be planted per bigha of land which yields an average of 1000-1200 pineapples every year.
Sources said farmers of the upazila have brought about 10,000 acres of land under pineapple farming this year.
Rabindranath, a fortunate farmer of Raban village, changed his lot by cultivating the honey queen variety of pineapple on his high lands.
He said this year he planted 4,000 saplings on his five bighas of land which cost about Tk 10,000.
The pineapple harvesting began in the 2nd week of April. Rabindranath expressed satisfaction over the production and is hopeful to earn about Tk 1.5 lakh by selling pineapple this year.
This variety of pineapple sells for Tk 35-40 at present.
Like Rabindranath, a number of farmers have also changed their lot by farming pineapple in their lands of Palash upazila.
