After two years, since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, Eid markets are seeing record sales amid a huge rush of buyers this year here at the last moment ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr festivity in Rangpur and Rajshahi markets.

Leaders of different trade bodies and traders said Eid shopping has now reached its peak amid tight security measures at all markets, shopping malls, complexes and centers, and makeshift roadside markets.

The selling of Eid items has marked a record despite higher prices this year following continuous improvement in the economic conditions of common people in the urban, suburban, and rural areas.

Local sources said presently, markets have worn festive looks with a rush of men, women, adolescents, and university students buying Eid items, and their movements have created traffic jams in Rangpur city.

Rangpur Metropolitan Police has tightened security measures and launched special road traffic systems to enable rushing people to the markets easily without any untoward incident in the city.

Members of the police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-13, and intelligence personnel are being found patrolling markets, shopping malls, and centres both in uniforms and plainclothes in the city.

Authorities of different business establishments, shopping malls, complexes, markets, and centres have also taken their security measures to ensure a peaceful environment for Eid shoppers.

According to the shoppers, prices of clothes and other Eid items are higher this time than in the previous couple of years.

However, high prices of Eid items have almost no impact on buyers, said owners of different shops and sales centres.

Businesspersons Mohammad Ali, Tuhin Chowdhury Amirul Haque, and Akkas Ali at different markets of Rangpur expressed satisfaction over record sales of Eid clothes, shoes, cosmetics, and other goods in the last three days.

Similar situation can be seen in Rajshahi as the movement of shoppers has created huge traffic congestion in the major shopping areas of the city.

Sekendar Ali, general secretary of the city’s RDA Market Businessmen Association, said that sales were showing an upward trend since the last couple of days.

Salesmen of different markets, footpaths, makeshift sales centers are passing busy time from morning to midnight as shoppers of all ages gathered there, he added.

Silk fabrics, woven and designed by local artisans, are in huge demand in the Eid markets, with the affluent people rushing to the city silk showrooms every day.

Saidur Rahman, Showroom in-charge of Sapura Silk, said katoar design sharee on muslin is their greatest attraction for this Eid. Different designs of sarees are priced from Tk 3,800 to Tk 1,45,000.

Deployment of law enforcers at different points and market places and engagement of private security men at shopping malls by the authorities concerned have ultimately created a fool-proof security arrangement for businessmen as well as shoppers.

The RMP traffic department also blocked all intersections in front of all markets and shopping malls to ensure uninterrupted movement of vehicles. RMP has set up police boxes beside the gates of all busy markets.
