At least nine shops were gutted in a massive fire that broke out at Indurhat Bazar in Nesarabad upazila of Pirojpur on Wednesday night.
Abir Md Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Nesarabad police station said the fire broke out around 11 pm at an eyewear showroom and soon engulfed the adjacent business establishments.
“Fortunately, no casualties were reported,” he said.
According to the Station Officer of Nesarabad Upazila Fire Service and Civil Defense Md Abdus Salam, The fire originated from an electric short circuit.
On information, a team of firefighters from Nesarabad Upazila Fire Service and Civil Defense rushed to the spot and doused the fire with the help of locals and affected businessmen after one and half hours of effort, he added.
The affected businessmen claimed that the extent of losses caused by the fire would exceed Tk 50 lakh. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Mosharraf Hossain visited the spot.
The UNO said the higher authorities will be informed to help them after determining the amount of damage.
“Anyway, a probe has been ordered to ascertain the exact cause of the fire and the extent of damage,” a fire official said.
