Journalist AKM Jahurul Haque passes away

AKM Jahurul Haque, senior journalist and Chattogram Hill Tracts (CHT) correspondent of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), passed away at his Chattogram residence on Sunday night.

He was 76.

“He breathed his last at about 8.30 pm at his residence,” Haque’s elder son told BSS. He suffered a stroke eight years ago and almost remained bedridden until his death.

Regarded as an expert on hill tracts affairs, Haque was entrusted with the task of coordinating the coverage of three hill districts of Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban for BSS, the national news agency, for a long time.

Former State Minister of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs and Parliamentary Standing Committee Member on the Ministry of Food Dipankar Talukder, issued a statement condoling Haque’s death and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.

Managing Director and Chief Editor of BSS Abul Kalam Azad mourned his death and recalled his laudable works for the national news agency.

He conveyed his deep sympathy to the members of the bereaved family and prayed for his eternal peace.

Rangamati Hill District Council Chairman Aungsuipru Chowdhury also issued an identical condolence message.

Rangamati Press Club and Rangamati Journalists’ Association also expressed deep sorrow at Haque’s death.

Haque previously served as the CHT correspondent of The Daily Star, The New Age, now defunct The Bangladesh Observer and UNB news agency.

He left behind his wife, three daughters, a son, several grandchildren and a number of admirers cutting across the socio-professional strata alongside the journalists.
