The price of local onion or desi onion has gone up by Tk 10-12 per kg at the retail market at Hili port in Dinajpur due to a halt in Indian onion imports.
Onions were being sold for Tk 30 per kg last week at the local markets but the price has gone up to Tk 40-42 this week.
The local shops were selling local onions as the import of Indian onion has stopped through the Hili land port.
Rubel, a retailer, said the price of domestic onions has been rising and falling due to the ban on onion imports from India. Compared to the last two days, the price has increased by Tk 10-12 per kg.
Onions are being sold in the market at Tk 40-42 depending on the type. No varieties of Indian onions are currently available in the port market.
Onion importers at Hili land port said that the import of onions from India through the port has stopped since Eid-ul-Fitr due to the expiration of the Import Permit (IP). Now the prices are starting to rise as the supply in the domestic onion market is declining. The traders are worried that the price may go up further before Eid-ul-Azha. However, if imports of Indian onions begin again, prices will come down further.
