Amtali cattle market of Barguna is less crowded than usual ahead of Eid-ul-Azha – MD Mohiuddin Opu

The sacrificial cattle market of Barguna is less crowded with buyers than expected ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

Traders claim that the sale of cattle markets has collapsed due to the floods in the north.

According to the decision of the meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee, the holy Eid-ul-Azha will be celebrated in Bangladesh on Sunday, July 10.

However, the market for sacrificial animals was not as crowded as expected. Amtali cattle market in Barguna district has a reputation as the largest cattle market in the south. Domestic and foreign cows of different breeds are raised here and are bought and sold.

Although this market is more crowded with buyers before Eid, this time it is the scene is quite different. Although the market is full of domestic breeds of cows, the price of cattle has come down due to the crisis of buyers.

Local sources say sales have plummeted in the north as a result of the floods in the north. Not many wholesale buyers came to the market. As a result, the price of cattle has come down.

About 2,000 cows were sold in the third week of June but the number halved in the last week. Mizanur Rahman the director of the Amtali cattle market said the sales may increase a few days before Eid.

Amtali cattle market is held every Wednesday of the week. Farmers from different areas of the south including Barishal, Patuakhali, Barguna, Bhola and Pirojpur bring their cows to the market.

At least 7,000 cows are brought for sale in the market every week. Wholesale buyers from different districts of the country including Kushtia, Jhenaidah, Jashore, Rajshahi, Pabna, Dinajpur, Noakhali, Cumilla, Sylhet, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Laxmipur and Shirajganj come to this market.
