At least 23 people were killed and more than 40 others injured in separate road accidents in Sirajganj, Mymensingh, Tangail, Bogura, Brahmanbaria, Jhenaidah, Dinajpur, Cumilla and Dhaka on Saturday, police said.
In Sirajganj, at least three people were killed and 10 others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck on the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway of Tarash upazila.
The 3 deceased were identified as Aziz of Bagha area of Rajshahi, Miraj of Ishwardi area of Pabna and Raihan of Gazipur, Hatikumrul Highway Police Officer-in-Charge Lutfar Rahman confirmed.
OC Lutfar Rahman said a bus of RP Paribahan suddenly lost control and hit a truck coming from the opposite direction around 2.15 pm.
Three people died on the spot. Police rushed to the spot, rescued the injured and sent them to the hospital. The official said that the death toll may rise as the condition of some of the injured is critical.
In Mymensingh, three of a family died when a truck ran over them in front of Khan Diagnostic Center on Dhaka Mymensingh highway in Trishal around 1.45 pm.
The deceased were identified as Jahangir Alam, his wife Ratna Begum, and their child Sanjida of Trishal upazila. Main Uddin, OC of Trishal police station confirmed the matter.
The OC said the deceased husband and wife and their 5-year-old child had come for ultrasonography of the pregnant woman. While crossing the road, a Mymensingh-bound truck ran over them. Three of them died on the spot.
In Tangail, at least four people were killed and 15 others injured when a commuter bus crashed into a truck parked along the busy Dhaka-Tangail highway in Mirzapur upazila early morning.
The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Molla Tutul, officer-in-charge of Gorai Highway Police Station, said the accident occurred around 4.30am when the ‘Binimoy Paribahan’ bus hit the stationary sand-laden truck from behind in the Dulla Mansur area.
In Tangail, three people, including a mother and her two children, died when a bus ran into them at the Zamurki area of the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu bridge highway on Saturday around 12:15 pm. The deceased were identified as Parveen Akhtar, 28, wife of Masud and their children Sumon, 8, and Sadia, 6 of Bashtail area of Mirzapur upazila of the district.
Mirzapur Police Station OC Sheikh Abu Saleh Masud Karim said, “While crossing the road on foot, a bus came and hit them. One died on the spot and two died in the hospital.”
In Bogura, four people, including a father-son duo, were killed and another one injured when a truck hit a private car at Kalia Pukur in Kahalu upazila this morning.
The deceased were identified as Tanser Ali, 60, his son Tagar Ali, 35, Abdur Rahman, 35, son of Mafiz Uddin, and Sumon, 30, a private car driver.
Ambar Hossain, OC of Kahalu Police Station, said the accident occurred around 8am when the Naogaon-bound truck from Bogura hit the private car at Dargahat, leaving three people dead on the spot and two others injured.
The injured were taken to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College, where doctors declared Abdur Rahman dead on arrival.
In Brahmanbaria, two people were killed and four others injured in a road accident on the Cumilla-Sylhet highway in the Ujanisar area in Sadar Upazila of the district on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as the CNG driver Md Chan Mia, 50, and Billal Mia, 45 sons of Abdu Mia of Khadera Union of Kasba Upazila of the district.
OC of Khantihata Highway Police Station Sukhendra Basu said a microbus was going towards Cumilla on the way and had a head-on collision with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction in the area on Saturday 12-noon, leaving six persons injured seriously.
Later, the injured were rescued and taken to Brahmanbaria 250-bed District Hospital, but two of them succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, the OC added. In Dhaka, a young man, identified as Ibrahim Biswas, 24, who was going to Karwan Bazar for buying vegetables, died after a bus hit his rickshaw at Panthapath intersection early Saturday morning.
The accident occurred around 3.45am, said Md Shahabuddin, sub-inspector at Shahbagh Police Station.
“Ibrahim used to look after the hotel business of his maternal uncle Kabir Hossain, in the Najira Bazar area of Dhaka. He met with the tragedy while he was on his way to buy vegetables,” the officer said.
In Jhenaidah, a farmer was killed and six others were injured in a road accident at Barbazar Firozpur in Kaliganj upazila.
In Dinajpur, a motorcyclist was killed when a truck hit his motorcycle in front of Central Graveyard in Khansama upazila around noon.
In Cumilla, a flautist was killed and his associate injured when a speedy bus hit their motorbike on Cumilla-Noakhali Highway at Harishchar in Cumilla Sadar Dakkhin upazila in the early hours of Saturday.
