Farmers of Panchagarh are happy with the bumper yield and fair price of peanut this year as per maund peanut is being sold at Tk 4,000-4,200.

Department of Agricultural Extension office sources said, about 11,795 hectares of land have been brought under peanut cultivation in all five upazilas in the district with the production target of 24000 metric tonnes of peanut.

Deputy Director DAE of Panchagarh Md Riaz Uddin said peanut cultivation is more lucrative as its cultivation cost is less. There is no need to give irrigation and fertiliser on peanut land. About eight to 10 maunds of peanut are produced from one bigha (33 decimal) of land.

Sunil Kumar of Sabuspara village in Debiganj upazila said he had cultivated peanut in four bighas and got 30 maunds of peanut. He earned a profit of Tk 60,000.

High land is good for peanut cultivation. The land of Panchagarh is comparatively high and suitable for the cultivation of peanut.

The DAE has given quality seeds and fertilisers to the farmers free of cost. The DAE has also given modern technology training to the farmers for boosting production.

Commercial banks, including Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank, have given short-term easy loans to the farmers for the cultivation of peanut.
