Fishermen said that on Tuesday afternoon, a trawler named Ma-Babar Doa-3 of Ma-Babar Doa-3 of Fisheries Ghat of Chittagong returned to Chairman Ghat with a trawler full of hilsa fish from the deep sea. The fish is unloaded from the trawler at the local Meghna Fishing Agency. The workers brought pieces of fish one by one to get the triple in front of the agency. At one point, the empty space in front of the Meghna Fishing Agency turned into a huge pile of small and large hilsa fish.
Eyewitnesses said that along with throwing fish in the heap, the auction was called. The call for the auction, which lasted for about 30 minutes, stopped at Tk 23,500 per maund. After the auction, 99 maunds of hilsa fish were found by measuring the pile of fish. The total price of which stands at Tk 23,26,500.
Fisherman Monir Hossain said that he is very happy to catch so many fish in one trawler and to get a good price for fish in Mokam. As more fish are caught, other fishermen will also be encouraged to fish in the deep sea.
Arif Hossain, a buyer said it was worthwhile for him to visit the ghat as he loved fresh hilsa. President of Hatia Fishery Traders Association Akhtar Hossain said, “Both fishermen and traders are happy to get so many fish after the ban. We expect a good fishing season this year.”
District Fisheries Officer Mohammad Iqbal Hossain said, “Currently fishermen have started returning after fishing hilsa from the sea estuary. Fishermen are returning with trawler-loads of hilsa every day”.
