Massive tree plantations can help reduce carbon emissions at a substantial level and that is very important to protect the ecological balance in the dried region.

There is no alternative to creating more forest areas to address the adverse impacts of climate change caused by global warming.

Utmost emphasis should be given to creating more forest areas which need creating awareness among the public in general so that they can contribute to this field effectively.

The observation came at the closing and prize-giving ceremony of a fortnight-long Rajshahi Divisional Tree Fair-2022 at the conference hall of City Bhaban in Rajshahi on Wednesday evening.

The Social Forestry Division (SFD) and Office of the Deputy Commissioner jointly organized the fair with a call to make the tree plantation campaign a social movement.

City Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton addressed the session as the chief guest with Deputy Commissioner Abdul Jalil in the chair.

In his welcome speech, Divisional Forest Officer Rafiquzzaman Shah gave an overview of the tree fair and narrated the achievements of forestry activities in the region.

Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Abu Kalam Siddique and Additional Superintendent of Police Ifte Khayer Alam also spoke.

Mayor Liton said optimum afforestation can be the best way of stopping the degradation of the environment and biodiversity making the country a safe habitat for all.

Expanding the country’s forest area by up to 25 per cent of the total landscape will protect Bangladesh from the possible alarming consequences of the ongoing climate changes, he added.

All people irrespective of age, sex, creed and cast should plant at least three saplings around their respective homesteads or on any open space to help maintain environmental and ecological balance and save the region from the wrath of any natural catastrophe.
