Inland waterways closed in Bhola

Due to inclement weather in the coastal Bhola district, all passenger boats and launches on inland waterways have been suspended from travelling.

Assistant Director Md Shahidul Islam of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Bhola, said this order will be effective from 9 am Sunday until further instructions are given.

The Meghna river is turbulent and overflowing. there is warning signal number 2 in the river port and warning signal number 3 in the sea and all fishing vessels have been asked to tread with caution.

“In order to ensure the safety of passengers in such a situation, all internal routes including Bhola-Barishal, Ilisha-Maju Chowdhury Hat, Tajumuddin-Monpura and all internal routes have been closed,” he added.

Meanwhile, the low-lying areas of various upazilas of the district have been flooded due to high tide.

At least 25 villages of Sadar Upazila of Bhola, Daulatkhan, Monpura and Charfesson Upazila have been reportedly flooded, inundating about 30,000 people. The flood has destroyed crop fields, houses and other infrastructures, and washed away fish from enclosures.
